Society if

Oscar Wilde claims disobedience causes progress to be made.  I'm not gonna lie, he has some cold quotes. They seem extreme but even now almost two hundred years later we can see some truth in them. Although it is probable that they were more accurate to society then. But for the prompt, I think he is only right a portion of the time. A better word should be criticism, because disobedience is more ambiguous.  However, I am going to question what he meant by progress. Did he mean progress to everyone's needs (happiness), or progress as a civilization (like advancements idk).  If the former, it makes sense that disobedience drives progress. It causes innovation and reform, which ultimately will result in more people being happy and satisfying in more people's needs.  But by the latter interpretation, I think disobedience will hinder "progress". Because we will have a bunch of people unwilling to fulfill their duty and contribute to society in order to move forward...

This is life

Hello everyone,  I am taking inspiration from the "This is Water" essay we read in class and also this . We are all alive. The possibility that each of us are alive is small. A quick google search reveals the chance to be 1 in 10^2685000. (Imagine having 2 million dice, each with a trillion sides, and having them all land on 439,505,270,846 on a single roll). Although I am skeptical of this number, the probability is tiny nonetheless. This is the result of thousands and thousands of years of survival of your ancestors. All the way down the family tree, until you are born, and the infinitesimal chance that the genes created you, and not someone else.  Considering the low odds that we are alive, it is a good idea to try to live a good life. What people think a good life is will vary between success and happiness. For example, if you were rich and had accomplished many things despite being stressed and unhappy, is that a good life? Or on the other hand, if you were homeles...

What is a memorial? By definition, a memorial is something (especially a structure) that is established to remind people of a person or an event. But the lines aren't very clear. Is a photograph a memorial as it encapsulates a moment in the past? Are my dirty clothes on the floor a memorial as a reminder of what happened that day? Are we as living humans a memorial because everyday we are forced to move on and leave the past behind? This last week in class we discussed memorials. The material in class has been really thought-provoking.. I think for a lot of us, whenever we came across a memorial or monument of some sort we would not think much of it. Now having learned about the possible meanings behind even the most intricate and seemingly purposeless details, I feel like I can envision what the designer was feeling in the moment of creating the memorial. It has had me wondering what a memorial may constitute. To me, a memorial follows the definition provided by Merriam-Webster; s...
