Modern artists should lose their jobs

The Great Gatsby has been interesting seeing how life was like back in the 1900s. The changes in environment, people and the English language are very apparent through reading this novel. The cause of change is the modernism mindset, along with wealth.

However, not all changes were good. In my opinion, things like abstract art and atonal music and poetry and architecture have seen a downgrade over the years. The creators became tired with traditional ways of doing things, so they started using Easter egg-esque details with a hidden meaning or in general creating something with many interpretations.

I think some of the creators have taken it too far trying to create a deeper meaning. We've all seen those paintings that look like they were drawn by a blind second grader who spent about 12 seconds. And these paintings are also being displayed in museums and galleries as "art".

Apparently this thing was sold for an equivalent of $317mil USD. There is not a single person who looks at this and can actually come up with any deeper meaning. When I googled this I could only find people praising it, but I think in reality everyone is thinking the same thing; it is nothing more than a bunch of scribbles. Also who bought this thing?

As a result of the modernist period, poetry has also experienced some downgrade(in my opinion). As a kid I always thought poems had to rhyme, and anything that didn't automatically disqualified it as a poem. To me, the flow and rhythm of a poem is what made it a poem. But because of modernism, poets got tired of rhyming and started moving towards free verses. Poems are gradually becoming more formless and shapeless, resembling more of a string of words. I mean, poems are just words after all, but they look like a normal sentence that was split into lines and then all of a sudden it's a poem. What is the point then?'

It is still interesting to see what these might look like in another 100 years. Going down this trajectory, will art in the future just be a blank canvas (this probably happened already), or a poem that is just a couple of words? Or will we see some other radical change?

  1. I liked how you took modernism, a concept we learned in class and expanded upon it by stating your own opinion. I also liked how you disagreed with the interpretation of art in recent years and supported this by bringing up an absurd example of a painting being sold for $317 million. I'd like to believe that even I could draw something similar to the paintings you showcased above.

  2. I like how you conveyed your point with memes and a converstional tone to make your readers understand your reasoning for why modern artists should lose their jobs. Although the title's a little harsh, there have been blank canvases sold!

  3. I would completely agree with your point on modern art. Although obviously if you find meaning, you will be able to, but art should be enjoyable to all audiences, not just the ones that looks at a blank piece of paper and calls it a masterpiece.

  4. I agree about your stance on modern art. It definitely defeats the purpose of it in a lot of way, especially since the meaning behind it can be so broad.
